Prince Phillip on Wind Turbines: “Disgrace” “Fairy Tale”

It appears there’s at least one person in the Royal family with some common sense. Prince Phillip lets it fly and tells us what he really thinks!

In comments that put him sharply at odds with the Government, the Prince reportedly said the farms were a ‘disgrace’ and they would never work. He also described people who backed them as believing in a ‘fairy tale’.

Energy Secretary Chris Huhne last month denounced opponents of the plans as ‘curmudgeons and fault-finders’ and praised the turbines as ‘elegant and beautiful’.

Chris Huhne. who’s obviously dumb and blind, must also think that Roseanne Barr should be parading around in a bikini at the next Miss America contest.

Now if he’d only grab his son, Prince Charles, by his Dumbo-sized ears and rattle some sense into his head we might have something.

Yet Another Reason to Bury the Bullet Train in California

What started as a $33 billion project, then recently mushroomed into a $98.6 billion project, that only one week later mushroomed into a $117.6 billion dollar project, now has another problem.  This problem, no doubt, will again raise the already astronomical costs of the bullet train that Californians will not only get stuck paying for, but will probably be stuck subsidizing for almost eternity.

It now seems that the grand plan to tunnel under San Jose, California isn’t so grand after all. According to yet another study:

“We have looked at this very thoroughly and done very detailed engineering for this,” said Dan Leavitt, the authority’s deputy director, about the tunnel option. “It is not a constructable scenario for high-speed rail.”

In a nutshell this means the transportation hub in San Jose will need to be built above ground, which means that they’ll have to spend more money buying up property that they would not have had to purchase if the underground station was viable.

Meanwhile, in what appears to be a fit of delusion, instead of telling the state to shove it, the City of San Jose will continue to spend more tax dollars studying this, even though budget problems have reduced the number of police and fire personnel on duty.

The Legislature and Governor Jerry Brown also appear to be delusional about this costly and unneeded train to nowhere. It is  seriously not funny that this fiasco continues to spend money needed elsewhere.  California’s budget deficit is now expected to have a $13 billion budget deficit by mid-year that will cause $2 billion in automatic spending cuts, many in education.

Meanwhile, the Board of Regents of California State University, who raised tuition 15.5% last November just voted yesterday to again increase tuition by another 9%. This is a total increase in just one year of 25.5%.  If you want to know what this costs students in dollars here it is:

The price of a year at CSU has risen steadily for years. Next fall, basic tuition will be $5,970. With a mandatory fee averaging $1,047 across the 23-campus system, the price will stand at $7,017. That’s more than triple what it cost in 2002-03.

It is a total shame that the State Legislature and Governor Jerry Brown don’t pull the plug on the bullet train boondoggle that continues to grow in size and cost and may accelerate putting the State of California into bankruptcy before it’s over and done with. Talk about fiddling while Rome burns, this has to be it.

The only thing green about this project is the obscene amounts of money that will be spent on a boondoggle that will only green the pockets of unions, who evidently have much of California’s government in their hip pockets.

Let’s not forget the United States debt just hit $15 trillion yesterday. How about paying bills before spending on boondoggles?

We urge you to read more of the gory details of this CO2 Insanity at the source below.

More Obama Green Nepotism.

It looks like more greenbacks provided by taxpayer’s hard work have flown into a company named Brightsource, conveniently owned by  Robert Kennedy Jr. and conveniently granted $1.4 billion of your tax dollars by an ex-employee who’s now conveniently a Department of Energy big cheese.

President John F. Kennedy’s nephew, Robert Kennedy, Jr., netted a $1.4 billion bailout for his company, BrightSource, through a loan guarantee issued by a former employee-turned Department of Energy official.

The details of how BrightSource managed to land its ten-figure taxpayer bailout have yet to emerge fully. However, one clue might be found in the person of Sanjay Wagle.

Wagle was one of the principals in Kennedy’s firm who raised money for Barack Obama’s 2008 presidential campaign. When Obama won the White House, Wagle was installed at the Department of Energy (DOE), advising on energy grants.

From an objective vantage point, investing taxpayer monies in BrightSource was a risky proposition at the time. In 2010, BrightSource, whose largest shareholder is Kennedy’s VantagePoint Partners, was up to its eyes in $1.8 billion of debt obligations and had lost $71.6 million on its paltry $13.5 million of revenue.

It’s amazing how those DOE handed-out taxpayer dollars seem to go to good buddies of Obama isn’t it? Oh well, nothing to see here, move on please. Just another $1.4 billion that will probably go down the tubes never to be seen again ala Solyndra, AKA: More CO2 Insanity.

James Hansen Paid by Green Group

Well, well, isn’t it funny how everyone who doesn’t believe in global warming and who doesn’t genuflect at the sight of Al Gore is accused by the warmers of being paid off by the oil companies or the Koch brothers?

Put the shoe on the other foot and find out global warming’s ‘hot’ scientist Dr. James Hansen is being paid by a green group and we see nothing hitting the fan in the MSM at all. Nothing here to see folks, move on now. If the warmers do it it’s perfectly OK. So, what happened?

So on Friday the Obama administration stopped fighting a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request and released documents showing that Hansen was paid $250 an hour by a Canadian law firm for testimony against developing Alberta’s oil sands; income which Hansen does not appear to have disclosed.

$250 an hour? Not bad, we wonder if he got meals, hotel and transportation, too? We also wonder why he didn’t report it as required by law? So who was Hansen testifying for?

A January 20, 2009, document shows that the Canadian law firm Ackroyd LLP retained Hansen to prepare a report “regarding the anticipated greenhouse gas emissions from the Joslyn Oil Sand Mine.”

Ackroyd represents the Oil Sand Environmental Coalition (OSEC), a group fighting to stop oil sand development.Federal government employees are not allowed to accept money for expert testimony in proceedings before a court or agency of the United States. (This took place in Canada FYI).

And what about those reporting requirements? Reporting? Evidently Hansen must have a special exclusion for warmers or something.

It is still unclear how much money Hansen received from Ackroyd, however, since his 2010 financial disclosure form did not list them as a source of income. Neither does his 2009 form. There is also no record of his disclosing any travel expenses related to his 2010 oil sands testimony in Canada.

Of course, we also don’t see any rush from anybody at NASA, GISS, the Justice Department, the State Department or any other department to investigate and if need be prosecute. You probably won’t see anything in the warmer MSM either. Hypocrites!

Another Energy Company Goes Broke!

Yes, the Obama administration has the equivalent of a gardener having a brown thumb. It seems no matter what it touches, it withers and dies. This time it’s $39 million tax dollars out the window.

An energy company that received a $43 million loan guarantee through the same federal program that backed Solyndra has followed the path of the failed solar firm and filed for bankruptcy.

Beacon Power Corporation filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on Sunday in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Delaware. The company, which develops energy storage systems based on what are known as “flywheels,” had received the federal guarantee for a 20-megawatt energy storage plant in Stephentown, N.Y., back in August 2010.

Add this one to the list consisting of Solyndra, Spectra Watt and Evergreen Solar who have also received hundreds of millions of tax payer dollars and have filed for bankruptcy.  They screwed the  taxpayers, too.

The Massachusetts-based company also received $29 million in grants from the Energy Department and the state of Pennsylvania through separate programs for a plant in Hazle Township, Pa.

So, what kind of green jobs did this create (or rather was supposed to create) and at what cost? Let’s do some simple mathematics. Take the above $43 million + the above $29 million and you get a total of $72 million dollars. So how many employees?

When the project was approved, the Energy Department reported that the loan guarantee would help save or create 14 permanent jobs and 20 construction jobs.

If  you take the total of permanent and temporary jobs that is a total of 34 employees. Divide $72 million by 34 and that is an astronomical $2.11 million per job.  Divide the $72 million by the 14 permanent jobs and that’s an even more astronomical $5.14 million per job.

This is why the government should keep their nose out of it. If solar and wind power are such a hot commodity, then venture capitalists would be so eager to pump money into them that government subsidies would not be required. It would be their decision, their money and their risk.

Federal and state governments really have no business making extravagant loans to companies with unproven technology or a manufacturing process that cost so much the Chinese can easily undercut the price. Politics mixing with private industry is a recipe for disaster as proven by these failures.

Warmers, please don’t mention oil and gas subsidies. Those are proven technologies that actually produce something usable by taxpayers and as such, we don’t have a problem with them.

It’s About Time! It’s AGW Lie Detector Time!

Finally, someone’s going to get the old BS Meter out and see if it exposes any anthropogenic global warming lies over research on polar bears done by Jeffrey Gleason and Charles Monnett. From the Daily Mail:

A wildlife scientist, whose report on dead polar bears in Arctic waters became a rallying call for climate change campaigners, will face a lie detector test as part of an investigation by federal agents.

Jeffrey Gleason, who co-wrote a 2006 report highlighting the danger posed to the animals by melting ice, will take a polygraph over alleged scientific misconduct connected to the study, the Independent reported.

Polar Bears have been around for about 150,000 years now. They have survived two periods over this time when it was 5F to 7F warmer than it is now, yet the paper being investigated makes some rather astronomical claims about polar bear mortality due to global warming. Moreover, the study touted wasn’t even about polar bears, it was based  upon research on bowhead whales, who to my considerable powers of observation don’t have white fur.

So, what is the alleged problem with the paper? From Natural News we get these tidbits:

According to a recent report by Human Events, special investigators from the US government’s Interior Department (ID) have found that a scientific paper published in a 2006 issue of the journal Polar Biologyis filled with baseless assumptions about four specific polar bear deaths— and this eventually became the foundational argument for the fight against global warming. But in reality, the deaths may have had nothing to do with melting ice caps, and everything to do with a simple windstorm.

According to investigators, Monnett’s calculations concerning polar bears’ rate of survival, however, are flawed because he not only failed to verify that the four dead polar bears he witnessed were the same ones that he saw a week prior, but he also allegedly used faulty percentages in the process. As a result, polar bears ended up getting listed as a protected species under the Endangered Species Act, even though they are likely not endangered, and are not dying at the rates to which Monnett had implied.

Believe it or not, this was supposedly peer-reviewed, too. Which is another nail in the coffin regarding the so-called peer review process that goes on with anything to do with global warming. I often wonder if the peer-review process is – if it’s warm it’s hot if it denies it’s not.

This report has also been touted by, guess who? Al Gore of course. It has no doubt prompted many or all of the polar bear photos posted around the internet, in newspapers and magazines that show bears perched upon what are claimed to be shrinking icebergs.

We say if there’s nothing to hide then why all the defensive fuss from the warmer camp? It won’t be long now and we’ll know if scientists lied and polar bears didn’t die. More faux science? More CO2 Insanity? You decide!

Why Computer Models are Crap

Next time you read an article about global warming that states the computer models predicted something remember this article, which offers proof positive that the computer models used by so-called scientists to predicts unprecedented global warming are crap.

From Scientific American we get this:

When it comes to assigning blame for the current economic doldrums, the quants who build the complicated mathematic financial risk models, and the traders who rely on them, deserve their share of the blame. [See“A Formula For Economic Calamity” in the November 2011 issue]. But what if there were a way to come up with simpler models that perfectly reflected reality? And what if we had perfect financial data to plug into them?

Incredibly, even under those utterly unrealizable conditions, we’d still get bad predictions from models.

That’s right, even a computer model that is “perfect” isn’t worth the electricity used to run it. The problem is calibration. In a nutshell, take a “perfect” model and tweak it any and it is no longer going to predict anything correctly.

The problem, of course, is that while these different versions of the model might all match the historical data, they would in general generate different predictions going forward–and sure enough, his calibrated model produced terrible predictions compared to the “reality” originally generated by the perfect model. Calibration–a standard procedure used by all modelers in all fields, including finance–had rendered a perfect model seriously flawed. Though taken aback, he continued his study, and found that having even tiny flaws in the model or the historical data made the situation far worse. “As far as I can tell, you’d have exactly the same situation with any model that has to be calibrated,” says Carter.

Calibration, tweaking, adjusting, cheating, lying, stealing, or whatever you want to call it, produces crap. Crap financial models or crap climate models, it’s all the same crap.

Note, to reiterate. it doesn’t matter if it agreed with past data, a process called hindcasting, which is a big line you hear from climate modelers, it still comes up with crap predictions! Getting one to agree with the weather in 1900 means nothing according to this article.

The next time you read some horrific article about how global warming is going to make the sea-level rise, cause droughts, floods, and just about anything else you can name including 3-eyed cows and cooties, remember that the climate model used to predict it is crap. Perhaps it was even tweaked to arrive at a preconceived conclusion.

Proof? The computer models used to predict tomorrow’s weather aren’t even right all the time.  So, how can they predict what’s going to happen 20-30-100 years in the future?

Read more details about this at Scientific American.

Skeptic Economist in Critical Assessment of Climate Consensus

John O’Sullivan has an article about Professor Ross McKitrick’s latest paper at Suite 101. He describes Professor McKitrick as:
A prominent economist opposed to global warming doomsaying publishes a rebuke to climate consensus, comparing scientific and economic consensus.
Below are some excerpts from Mr. O’Sullivan’s article:

The Canadian professor holds strong views on this topic, having written frequent op-eds, a book, journal articles and think-tank reports. He concludes, “The public has acquired a dim view of the credibility of climate science, and based on what I have seen, the public is right.”

The latest paper asks the reader to imagine that the International Monetary Fund (IMF) had created an economics version of the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). McKitrick sets up the scenario that economists, like climate scientists might proceed to issue an Assessment Report and Summary for Policymakers every five years. Thus economists, like climate scientists, would seek to claim a consensus view of what “every mainstream economist believes.”

The point is, it doesn’t matter what you are talking about, consensus is not always a good thing. It is being misused with climate science and can be misused in other areas to usurp control for nefarious purposes.

You can read it all at the source below:

Another Solar Fail

Solargenix Energy - Formerly Duke Solar Energy - The Natural Power For Good

Here’s another example of how government cronyism causes tax-payers to lose money on solar power scams. From Chicago, the home of government corruption we get this new fail. This time, for a change, it’s solar hot water heating systems made by a company called Solargenix Energy LLC.

In March 2004, then-Mayor Richard M. Daley announced a deal that promised to save taxpayer money, reduce natural gas consumption and bring “green” jobs to Chicago.

But taxpayers might see red when they learn how the deal turned out. More than seven years later, the initiative has been quietly suspended amid problems with some of the equipment — and acknowledgements by city officials that taxpayers will probably lose money on the deal and never realize the energy savings that Daley touted, the Better Government Association has learned.

So where’s the cronyism? Right here.

In the end, the BGA found that one of the few beneficiaries of the deal appears to be a businessman with close ties to Daley: United Service Cos. President and CEO Rick Simon, the former chairman of the Chicago Convention & Tourism Bureau and a South Loop neighbor of the ex-mayor.

Seems those solar panels didn’t work properly and now that they’re fixed, the cost to install them exceeds the cost of continuing to use natural gas to heat the water. Regardless of what type of solar it’s a theme that we seem to see more of such as the boondoggle solar installation in Yosemite, which may never really pay off financially.

We’ve seen government cronyism involved with Evergreen, Solyndra, Sun Power, Tonopah Star and now in Chicago. We wonder how many billions will be wasted before someone finally gets a clue that solar has a long way to go and that the government should keep their nose out of it.

If it’s so effing great, the free-market will invest! If it sucks, they won’t. A pure and simple way to save the tax-payers billions of dollars better spent elsewhere and possibly some day get solar that actually works and is cost efficient.

Solar Panel Propaganda

Solar panels, touted by many to be a renewable energy panacea that will rid the planet of all those nasty coal-fired power plants, may be a bigger boondoggle than we already thought. We’ve already complained that they do not appear in many instances to provide a return in investment.

It now appears that the time they provide energy before replacement is required is dramatically less than claimed. Thus shortening not only the life of the panels and the electricity generated, but also reducing the return on investment.

If you listen to the mostly-Chinese manufacturers, solar panels work great. They can be expected to degrade about 0.5% a year. So that is how we build the economic models to finance, insure and subsidize the larger solar systems.

In the real world, we are just starting to find out how bogus many of those predictions are. The National Renewable Energy Laboratory says that panels can degrade as much as 4.5% a year. Or more. Put that in your pro forma and see what your banker and insurance agent — or Congressman — say about that.

While we see claims that average solar panels will last 25 to 30 years, the aforementioned claim of 0.5% per year means that solar panels should last an astounding 200 years (100% ÷ 0.5%). At the realistic rate of 4.5% per year they will only last about 22 years before replacement is needed (100% ÷ 4.5%), which is not even the 25 to 30 currently claimed by many and not even remotely close to 200 years.

It gets worse folks. They don’t only degrade, it appears they also can literally fall apart and it doesn’t take very long.

In Italy last year, “they discovered that after one year in the field, over 90% of the (solar panels) from a one megawatt project began to delaminate and ended up on the ground.”

That is a lot of wasted money. 90% down the tubes after being used for only one year. No return on investment and very little ‘free’ electricity generated. All that is left is an eyesore that is a pile of toxic waste, wasted tax dollars and perhaps a tax deduction for a business loss.

We are adverse to the lies about what renewable energy costs and what it’s capabilities are. We’re also adverse to the physical and financial messes left when solar and wind-power are abandoned. We’re extremely adverse to the rush to install solar and wind-power without having full knowledge about the effects. Look at the carnage left in the previous two links to see what we’re talking about.

California seems to be leading the rush off the proverbial cliff via the implementation of AB32, California’s cap & trade law, that mandates power providers to generate 33% of their power from renewable (green) sources by a not too distant 2020.

With many large solar projects planned in California, it would seem to be a logical move to slow down and find out what our money is being spent on and what the return on investment will be as opposed to rushing in head first, only to find another government mandated, costly boondoggle. To know what happens to government mandated boondoggles one only has to look at the Solyndra and Evergreen Solar fiascos.

You can safely bet that when these solar energy plants fall apart at the seams, the taxpayers and energy consumers of California and other states will get stuck paying for the bill. It’s probably also a safe bet that the messes left at abandoned solar and wind farms will be there for decades as a reminder of what happens when the government gets involved in what should be private enterprise.
